Science for Environment Policy

An article, recently published by the EU, sheds light on how environmental schemes which encourage and celebrate green behaviors actually help to promote further eco-friendly behaviors.

Businesses that pursue independent environmental accreditation not only benefit from the obvious outcomes, but also feel satisfaction by excelling in an area that many businesses neglect.

How can I tell which natural products I can trust?

The following stamps are ones you can trust - and should look for - on any beauty product claiming to be natural.

ECOCERT

To gain the 'organic' logo, there must be a minimum of 95% plant-based ingredients and a minimum of 10% of all ingredients must be organically farmed.

The coveted 'Eco Cert' cosmetics label requires a minimum of 50% plant-based ingredients in the formula and a minimum of 5% of all ingredients must be organic.

THE SOIL ASSOCIATION

Products must use the maximum amount of organic ingredients (95%). A product can say it has organic ingredients if they add up to more than 70% of the formula, however they cannot claim it is an 'organic' product as a whole.

NON-GMO

Simply requires products to contain no genetically modified organisms.

NO ANIMAL TESTING

The rabbit logo means that no 'new' animal testing went on at ANY stage of the production process. To find companies that live up to these standards, this is a reliable directory: http://www.peta.org/living/beauty-and-personal-care/companies/default.aspx

GA on BBC Radio Shropshire

Social Networking Sites can be very useful in this day and age. So when a member of a Local Radio station - BBC Radio Shropshire tweeted asking for information on any small businesses locally, I thought I'd use this opportunity to promote the Green Achiever Scheme.

Deb talked about the success of Green Achiever within its years of running and provided information about the company to those who would like to get in contact in the future, live on BBC Radio to local DJ Jim Hawkins.

Well done Deb!

The Sustainable Games

The BBC have reported that the London 2012 Olympics are to been hailed the Greenest Games ever.

Not only were the venues told to be made of at least a quarter of recycled materials and succeeded in doing so, but the Olympic park as a whole has been praised for its construction on a derelict site; benefiting the local wildlife, with its public transport links to and from the area proving a success.

If you were lucky enough to attend any of the events over the last two weeks, please let us know what it was like! Did you notice a push for sustainability whilst you were there? How did you travel there and back? What were the public transport links like?
