ISO 14001: It's not for everyone, especially SME's.

ISO 14001 makes it easy for large businesses to demonstrate their environmental credentials, however this heavyweight accreditation is not suitable for all businesses. Due to the cost of attaining ISO 14001, the various steps required to meet the criteria, and the year on year measurement of improvement, many SME's do not have the resources or finances to tackle and maintain it.

Although it is credited with being the 'best' and most widely recognised environmental accreditation, the aforementioned SME's are missing out. Procurement teams will look for businesses to have some evidence of an Environmental Management System (EMS), and although ISO 14001 demonstrates this, many companies just want a certificate!

That is why we provide Silver and Gold accreditation. It helps SME's to get a foot in the door and acts as a stepping stone for larger businesses approaching ISO 14001. We also make sure businesses keep moving forward by agreeing on actions for the future. To see a comparison between Silver/Gold and ISO 14001, click here

This post was inspired by an article from the Guardian 'ISO 14001: Loved by procurement, hated by SME's'.  It makes for a good read and explains the problems faced by small businesses looking to gain recognition for their environmental commitments.

If you are interested in what the Green Achiever Scheme can bring to your business, or are simply curious about environmental accreditation in general, give us a call on 01743 343 403 or e-mail info@greenachiever.co.uk

Science for Environment Policy

An article, recently published by the EU, sheds light on how environmental schemes which encourage and celebrate green behaviors actually help to promote further eco-friendly behaviors.

Businesses that pursue independent environmental accreditation not only benefit from the obvious outcomes, but also feel satisfaction by excelling in an area that many businesses neglect.

Why independent accreditation pushes businesses in the right direction...

This week, we stumbled across some information which explains very well how environmental accreditation can help businesses to become more sustainable.

It makes for an interesting read and gives some good reasons as to why it's worth investing in your green side!

http://urbantimes.co/magazine/2012/11/accreditation-schemes-the-push-businesses-need-to-go-green/

Although it focuses on multi-national corporations, green accreditation is just as worthwhile for SME's. Take a look at our website www.greenachiever.co.uk to find out more on how environmental credentials are becoming essential.

Tickets.com - Gold Green Achievers

Milton Keynes based Tickets.com, which specialises in providing integrated ticketing solutions designed to enable entertainment and sports organisations to sell tickets to consumers using their own brands, has attained gold standard status for the second year running. Having originally signed up to Green Achiever in May 2009, Tickets.com, which also has offices in Europe, the US, Asia Pacific and Africa, initially gained silver status in March 2011 and its first gold in June last year.

Daniel Burrows, internet services specialist at Tickets.com, said: “Despite many organisational changes, we have constantly maintained our level of environmental friendly commitment and will be implementing new ideas and plans for the future. For example, to better manage energy consumption, all employees and clients are now encouraged to reduce business travel by use of WebEx, training facilities are hired in a central location rather than have everyone travel long distances and the company has reduced its car pool from six to two.

“In the office, employees use energy efficient laptops and take them home with the power cable so as not to create residual energy draw happening while they are switched off. All the kettles have been replaced with a Burco to reduce the constant re-heating of water and all the chairs are now repaired and recycled rather than scrapped. We are currently engaging with our new landlord about us having more control over energy costs and consumption such as the lighting, ventilation and heating systems.”

Not so Sustainable

Coca-Cola, Nestle and Mars fail to look after the farmers producing the raw materials they rely on every day to make a big fat profit. Associated British Food (ABF) received the lowest rating with 13 out of 70 points. They produce goods such as Silver Spoon Sugar, Ovaltine and Kingsmill. Shockingly, the cereal shelf favorite Kellogg’s was also pretty poor, scoring 16 out of 70.

These rating are based on how their production impacts the local community, the environment and the welfare of the smallholders at the bottom of the pile. So, how and what are they tested on?
As part of their ‘Behind the Brands’ campaign, Oxfam measure the ‘big 10’ brands in seven categories.

These categories are:
·         Transparency of their supply chains and general operations
·         How they ensure the rights of workers
·         How they protect women’s rights
·         Their management of water
·         Their management of land
·         Their policies to reduce the impact of climate change
·         How they ensure the rights of the smallholders growing their ingredients

How all of the Big 10 fared

What confuses me is that, when asked to comment on their poor ratings, big companies such as coca-cola recited something as fleetingly satisfying as the very drink they are famed for. The trigger words are rife. ‘Sustainable…..sustainable…..sustainable’.  The meaning of this word has been debated for years. I acknowledge that Oxfam and Coca-cola will have varying ideas on just how ‘to-the-letter’ production can be, however it seems as though the ‘big 10’ have to readdress their definition of sustainability if these results are anything to go by.

In the treatment of women category, the management of land and its climate change policies, ABF scored just 1 out of 10. At a time when the British food industry is suffering from the horsemeat backlash, Oxfam have definitely struck whilst the iron is hot.

Fairtrade Fortnight

Fairtrade fortnight started yesterday. Initially pulled in by the opportunity to create a ‘mini marcher’, I logged on to the website to sign their petition. Despite the comical nature of the little cartoon character I created for myself, there really is nothing to laugh about. Infact, it makes for a pretty depressing lunchtime read while I’m munching away unwittingly.

It’s shocking that 50% of the world’s hungry are farmers who work tirelessly to produce food for the rest of the world. When many of us wouldn't think twice about throwing a soggy bag of pre-packed salad into the bin, these third-world workers are churning out food for everybody else just to scrape a living. The low wages paid to these farmers comes as a consequence of unethical trade. It means that we can afford to feed our families for less while those actually producing the food simply do not have that luxury.

To be totally honest, Fairtrade goods don’t normally spring to mind when I’m shopping, but does that make me a bad person? Unfortunately, I associated Fairtrade with the dusty shelves of charity shops stacked with a variety of dated cotton shirts which were undoubtedly the choice of the ‘Head Volunteer’. Still, if I was presented with a bar of rich, dark chocolate which was Fairtrade, I definitely wouldn't say no. I may even buy two. Until I became aware that Fairtrade week was in action, I’d never visited their website or ever really thought about what it does or what it means.

So today I present any readers with a little challenge and I want to know how you get on. The Green Achiever Scheme actively encourages businesses to source their goods from either local or Fairtrade suppliers. Why not make it your goal for this fortnight?

  • For your office kitchen, Clipper tea and coffee is all Fairtrade certified.  At the office we must get through at least 15-20 teabags a day with one coffee drinker single-handedly making her way through the delicious medium roast Arabica coffee granules. Boxes of teabags and barrels make for easy storage and, of course, can be recycled. Perfect! Find out more here.

  • Also, Mother’s Day is coming up. It falls on the final day of Fairtrade fortnight so, for all those sons and daughters who are often caught rushing to the petrol station for a bunch of sorry-looking flowers on the day, why not get her something now and earn double-smug points for preparedness and ethical sourcing? Green and Blacks chocolates are 100% Fairtrade and taste gorgeous. Visit their website for more info.

  • For anything else, look here. Check out the wine and the Tropical Wholefoods Fairtrade Mango!

Although these Fairtrade products are too good to waste and have an instant feel-good factor, there is something that you can do today. Sign up to the Fairtrade petition for Smallholder Farmers. This will be given to David Cameron before the G8 summit. It takes barely any time. Just follow this link: http://step.fairtrade.org.uk/

Reducing Waste While we Relocate!

As March rolls on, the Green Achiever scheme will be moving house! Whilst we are all very excited about this, there is one big problem which has made us pause: waste. From old archives to worn out stationary, there is certainly a fair amount of rubbish that we could just throw away.

But that's not really what we're about...if you hadn't already guessed. So, here's a few ways in which we have tried to streamline our office supplies by recycling the bits and bobs we just don't need.

1. Files
These are as numerous as they are annoying. Recycling the paper inside is relatively easy - it can be printed on if one sided, or taken to the paper recycling bank  - but the files...different story. Deb suggested that we see if other offices could make use of them or they could also be put on Freecycle or Ebay. However if you're feeling experimental, you could try this! >>>

2. Filled notebooks, magazines and brochures
As mentioned before, this is mostly paper and so can be easily recycled at our local bring bank. Mandy has also been taking shredded paper home to use as bedding for various livestock! Any coloured paper or magazines may be donated to a local school or college for their art department to use in collages and paper mache etc It may seem like an odd thing to do, but it's actually very useful.

3. Broken keyboards and dead mice.
It's such a shame when these break because they aren't obvious items to recycle at a standard recycling bank and have to be disposed of correctly to comply with WEEE regulations. But, for the more artistic among us, it has been suggested that the keys be prized off and used as name tags. Or, and this appeals to a mostly female office, make the keys into a handbag! However, more simply, the keyboard wire can be cut off (strangulation hazard) and it makes a surprisingly intriguing toy for kids. For the mice, someone on www.recyclethis.co.uk suggested filling it with wax and using it as a paperweight! Who knew?

4. Homeless Office Furniture
There are many collection schemes out there dedicated to collecting and recycling broken or redundant office furniture (I just Googled 'recycle office furniture' and plenty of services popped up) but in the stress of moving office, it won't be the first thing on your mind. However, as a former student, I would recommend asking around friends and family to see if any college-age kids need a desk and chair. Even if the chair is a little broken, the same restrictive 'Health and Safety' laws don't apply at home so a perfectly good chair can be put to use. Old wooden desks could also make great firewood for those with log burners.

5. Pens
Now for a bit of fun.
Even though it is tempting to just toss a dry Biro into the bin, please send your pens to 'The Pen Man'! Check out the 'Mercedes Pens' and his blog.

Your Green Back to School Guide

Where have the 6 weeks of summer gone? They've flown by in my opinion, and before we can even catch our breath, its time to sort the packed-lunches, straighten those ties and start the car up ready for the early morning run. Yes, its the dreaded back to school time!
Whether your child is starting a new school or heading back for the new year of term I'm aiming to provide you with the perfect solutions to staying green. I was due to post this before school started back, but before I had time to finish it Septembers already sped past and we are already at the beginning of October *and breathe*!

During my search for green, sustainable stationery, I found the following companies you many find useful:-

Nigels Eco Store - http://www.nigelsecostore.com/acatalog/eco-office.html - I feature this website a lot on this blog, but with good reason. They supply anything from stationery for school, notepads, paper and computer products at affordable prices.

Oxfam - http://www.oxfam.org.uk/shop/ethical-collection/cards-and-stationery?pscid=ps_ggl_GR_Ethical+Collection-Stationery&gclid=CNbGyoiH4rICFSTKtAodnGQAWQ Oxfam stock a range of ethical stationery items for organizing - from handy notebooks to pencil cases, calenders and diaries.

Other back to school supplies:

Bags -

Nigels Eco Storehttp://www.nigelsecostore.com/acatalog/Woven_.html - Again, Nigels Eco Store store some of the best (and outrageous!) eco-friendly bags around. They may be a bit too wild to use as a school bag, but they are still very stylish. They are woven from recycled juice cartons! Go look- I want one!

Amazon UKhttp://www.amazon.co.uk - Amazon stock a range of different eco-friendly bags for any occasion including school bags, fashion bags and laptop bags.

Cotton Shoppers - http://www.cottonshoppers.co.uk/?gclid=COjv5raW4rICFUbMtAodVTQASQ Cotton Shoppers stock paper, jute, canvas and plastic bags ready to be printed, branded and reused by you :-)

School Uniforms -

School uniforms are mostly passed down from sibling to sibling, from friend to friend and therefore are very widely reused in the UK. However, if you are looking for a brand-new shiny ethically sourced school uniform for your child, look no further:-

Cotton Roots - http://www.cottonroots.co.uk/new/?gclid=CNavquyX4rICFaTJtAodtVkAGw Cotton Roots have teamed up with Fairtrade to produce eco-friendly school uniforms for youngsters.

Nigels Eco Storehttp://www.nigelsecostore.com/acatalog/Organic_School_Uniforms.html Nigels Eco Store stock organic cotton school uniforms for both boys and girls at reasonable prices.

They are just a taster of some online companies who stock back to school supplies, if you could recommend any others or work for a company that stocks supplies yourself, just leave a comment below and I will be sure to add them to the blog post :-)

GA on BBC Radio Shropshire

Social Networking Sites can be very useful in this day and age. So when a member of a Local Radio station - BBC Radio Shropshire tweeted asking for information on any small businesses locally, I thought I'd use this opportunity to promote the Green Achiever Scheme.

Deb talked about the success of Green Achiever within its years of running and provided information about the company to those who would like to get in contact in the future, live on BBC Radio to local DJ Jim Hawkins.

Well done Deb!

Listen to her chat here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00y2ngj (Debs on the phone from about 41mins onwards)

Spotted - Pink Skips at Hoo Farm

When on a day out with some friends yesterday at Hoo Farm, Telford, I noticed a rather large eye-catching skip as I walked through the main entrance.
In sections labelled Cans, Paper, Plastic and Waste it could only belong to Pink Skips, a Self Assessed Green Achiever member. I thought I would share this photo as it highlights the importance of recycling waste, and what both Hoo Farm and Pink Skips are doing for the environment.

I hope you're having a great week so far, its lovely here in Shrewsbury today. Lets hope the bank holiday weekend is just as nice!

The importance of an Apprentice

This is a bit of a personal entry now, but I think its important to showcase the opportunity of hiring an Apprentice as part of the workforce within a company.

In late 2009, aged 18, I decided to leave University for personal reasons. From here, I decided to apply for an NVQ through the Shropshire Council after meeting with my local connexions officer and digging through my options on what to do next.

After a meeting with my advisor at the council where I was interviewed thoroughly, I left my trust within the team’s hands to find my suitable placement, waiting anxiously to hear back from them.

Just before the New Year, I received the good news that I had an interview with a local environment consultancy within the town. During the interview, I had to show off my computer skills by searching for appropriate travel and accommodation as requested.

From here, I was asked if I could work a week in January within the consultancy to see if I fit the job criteria. I really enjoyed this week as it gave me a real insight into what the job entailed, along with meeting and conversing with some of the staff.

Before the week ended, I was delighted to be asked if I would like to join the team and work on a 9 to 5 basis receiving a weekly Apprentice wage whilst completing the NVQ in Business Administration.

From January to September that year, I worked Monday to Friday whilst attending college once a fortnight. An assessor also visited me every few weeks at the office to check my progress and to helped me to complete my NVQ. This was done through recorded conversations, observation, gathering evidence, presentational tasks and knowledge questionnaires.

Within this time, my job equipped me with the correct skills to progress within my job role as administrative assistant and supporter to the Green Achiever scheme through communicating with others which has built up my confidence. I also developed my organisational skills, writing and researching technique and time keeping capability.

Since completing my NVQ and achieving a pass at level 2, I was asked to stay on in the office part time for two days a week whilst attending Wolverhampton University studying a Media and Communications degree. I have just finished my second year, achieving a high mark and I am due to start my third and final year in September.

The Apprenticeship programme gave me a great insight into the world of work and provided me with a job role which was very interesting, varied and challenging. The process also helped me prepare for the commitment and maturity needed to go to University and I am thoroughly enjoying the experience.

I recommend the NVQ Apprentice scheme to any young person who is interested in finding a job. The experience gained is valuable and will help you develop within the workplace in the future. I'd like to thank E4environment and the Green Achiever team for the opportunity to demonstrate my credentials and would recommend this company to anyone in the future.

Climate Week 2012

Climate Week 12th - 18th March 2012

"Climate Week is a supercharged national campaign to inspire a new wave of action on climate change taking place on 12-18 March 2012." @Climate_Week

Climate Week is Britain's biggest climate change campaign and is only four weeks away! It hopes to inspire businesses, schools, community groups, councils and many other sectors to raise awareness of climate change issues by staging events and taking part in Climate Week challenges. There will be a secret challenge that will take place on Monday 12 March 9.00am until 2.00pm and an hour long challenge that can be done at anytime during Climate Week. Teams need to come up with innovative and creative solutions to an unseen challenge.

There are a number of other ways to get involved, from cooking a low carbon meal; hosting a Climate Change Pub Quiz; organising a Swap, Recycling or Up-cycling event; walk, cycle or use public transport or inspire others to take actions to be more environmentally friendly. For more information and other ideas as to how to tackle climate change see http://www.climateweek.com/

Happy St Davids Day 2012

Wolverhampton University does Green Week!

For many students like myself who are interested in reducing our carbon footprint it came as a nice surprise when I logged on to Wolverhampton University's website this morning to see they are holding a 'Green Week' next week - 6th-10th February 2012.

Unfortunately, my timetable will see me in University for only 4 hours over 2 days next week, with my free time working back in the office, so I will not be able to take part in many activities. However, I thought I would advertise the event as it looks to be very interesting for students and teachers alike, and will hopefully help drive a lot more traffic to the University.

Green Week is taking place in the Students Union at Wolverhampton Campus as well as some activities spreading to Walsall Campus on Monday evening and Tuesday daytime.

Activites include a green tea party, quizzes, a mobile energy bike, Valentines day card making, talks, debates and stalls.

You can find an agenda for the week on the University website here : http://www.wolvesunion.org/yourunion/environment/greenweek/

Green Achiever have enquired with the Union to see if we can provide them with any leaflets throughout the event. We believe that with the help of the University, we can provide students and teachers with information on how to stay green whilst reducing their environmental impacts.

We hope you all had a lovely weekend and are staying wrapped up and warm in this icy weather!
